The Higgins Middle School received a grant to implement a Peer Mediation Program.

What is mediation?

Mediation is an opportunity for students involved in a conflict to sit down in a private setting with two carefully selected and trained Peer Mediators to try and resolve the issue(s). Peer Mediators do not solve the problem, but help the parties to come to a mutual agreement. A Peer Mediation Coordinator observes all mediations.

An actual mediation involves several steps. The Peer Mediators meet with both parties during the first joint session to get both sides of the story. The Peer Mediators then take a mediators break to discuss the situation. Following the break, each party is provided with a private session to vent and tell their side of the story. Once both parties have had their individual sessions, the later joint session occures whereby both parties come together to try and resolve the issue. If an agreement is made, the Peer Mediators record the agreement in writing.

Mediator News

Twenty students are currently attending a four-day training program. Peer Mediators were carefully selected by applications and interviews. All applicants were required to have support in the form of a signature from their parent/guardian, a teacher, their housemaster, and their guidance counselor. The mediators consist of 10 sixth graders and 10 seventh graders.
